First Joplin Recovery Fund Grant Cycle Opens for Non-Profits

The Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri, Inc., is now accepting applications for its first Joplin Recovery Fund grants to help area non-profit organizations with tornado recovery efforts.

The Joplin Tornado Recovery Grants will be open to agencies within the CFSWMO’s service area of Jasper, Newton, Barton and McDonald counties that have 501(c)3 or equivalent IRS status.

The grants will offer a range of $5,000 to $25,000 for non-profits including schools, churches and agencies. The review committee will consider three priority areas in making the grants – assisting individuals and families; addressing systemic issues; and rebuilding non-profit sustainability.

“We have many non-profits providing important services to tornado survivors, but they need support to continue their exceptional work during our long recovery ahead,” CFSWMO Board Chair Lisa Knutzen said. “We can help close the gaps that aren’t covered by other funding sources so these agencies can keep up with the increased demand they’ve seen since May 22.”

The Joplin Tornado Recovery Grant deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19, 2011. Applications can be completed online at:

Anyone without computer access who needs a copy of the application form can contact Michelle Ducre, CFSWMO, at (417) 359-5534; or Louise Knauer, Community Foundation of the Ozarks, (417) 864-6199.

The Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri, Inc., is the largest affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, a regional public foundation serving southern Missouri since 1973. They opened the Joplin Recovery Fund on May 23; since that time, 19 other funds have been established by companies and individuals to assist with tornado recovery efforts for a total of more than $3 million donated to all of the funds. The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation also is supporting this grant cycle in collaboration with the CFO/CFSWMO.

The Joplin Recovery Fund is intended for long-term recovery needs over the next several years under the direction of the CFSWMO Board of Directors. The CFSWMO and CFO have waived administrative fees for the Joplin Recovery Fund. Donations, which are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by the IRS, can be made online at:; or by mail to: Community Foundation of the Ozarks, P.O. Box 8960, Springfield, MO, 65801.
