New “Pennies for Passes” Fund to Aid CU Bus Passengers

Springfield City Utilities has opened a new “Pennies for Passes” fund at the Community Foundation to raise money to provide eligible bus passengers with weekly bus passes.

Veteran driver Martha Faught came up with the idea to help customers who are facing difficult financial circumstances and could use the boost of a weekly pass to assure they have transportation. It started by setting out coin jars to collect spare change from CU employees and expanded during the annual Communities in Motion Week when additional fundraising efforts boosted the fund.

CU Transit Director Carol Cruise chose the Community Foundation to set up a fund for future fundraising activities and to allow employees and the community to make tax-deductible contributions to the project.

Faught and longtime rider Lorraine Griffin, who says the $13 pass was invaluable when her husband was recovering from surgery in a nursing home and she had an unexpected serious furnace repair, were profiled in a KOLR story that aired on Dec. 23.
